master of none is a dance-theater piece that explores the relationship between masculinity, objectification, and trans identity in Midwest United States suburbia. Over the course of the performance, Jack, a high school boy, aims to discover what it means to "be a man" while navigating the instability of the world he has constructed around him. The piece features an eight person ensemble, who switch between performing as characters, objects, scenic elements and shadows throughout the show.
The ensemble physicalizes and defamiliarizes habituated masculine violence by enacting the harm associated with the “growing pains” of manhood with their bodies: by personifying objects such as a backpack being thrown to the ground and a wall being punched, the habitual violence enacted by Jack and teenage boys towards both objects and other bodies is starkly rendered and impossible to ignore.
